PGA Golf Championships
The PGA Championship, the only Major Championship for professionals, by professionals, returns to the scenic shores of Lake Michigan at Whistling Straits, August 10-16, 2015.
Previously held at Whistling Straits in 2004 and 2010, the PGA Championship will be making its third appearance at the Wisconsin venue, making it one of only seven courses to have hosted three or more PGA’s.
The PGA Championship (sometimes referred to as the U.S. PGA Championship or U.S. PGA) is an annual golf tournament conducted by the Professional Golfers Association of America.
The title of PGA Champion has been captured by the likes of Jason Dufner, Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and Phil Mickelson. Tickets will be available as inventory allows.
A sell-out is anticipated.
It is one of the four major championships in professional golf, and it is the golf season’s final major, usually played in mid-August four weeks after The Open Championship. Played in various locations throughout the USA, it attracts the major golf professionals from all over the world.
It is an official money event on the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour, with a purse of $10 million for the 96th edition in 2014 (making it the most lucrative of the four majors).
In line with the other majors, winning “the PGA” gives a golfer several privileges which make his career much more secure, if he is not already one of the elite players of the sport.
PGA champions are automatically invited to play in the other three majors (Masters Tournament, U.S. Open, and the Open Championship) for the next five years, and are exempt from qualifying for the PGA Championship for life.
Venue Information
In the early 1980’s Jack Nicklaus was commissioned to evaluate a 486-acre plot of rolling land 20 miles east of downtown Louisville. History’s greatest golf champion, Nicklaus, described the site in 1983 as a “golf designer’s dream” because there is a variety of terrain, vegetation and water to work with.
Everything necessary for an excellent golf course is here: room for wide, tree lined fairways and spectacular golf holes.
The course has a strong relationship with the PGA of America, having been the site of PGA Championships, the Club Professionals Championship (CPC), the Senior PGA Championship, and in 2008, the Ryder Cup.
The course challenges golfers with more than 40 strategically placed bunkers, and slick greens that feature distinct tiers and sections that provide a variety of challenging hole locations.
Valhalla Golf course is hallowed ground for many PGA tournament players and the PGA Championbships was held their in 2014 for the first time in many years drawing huge crowds and dedicated golf fans.
